At 130 kilometres from Pontedera there is a medieval city called
Siena. The main event is Palio of Siena, a horse race that is held
twice each year, on July 2 and August 16.There are 17 districts:
Aquila (eagle), Selva (forest), Valdimontone (valley of the ram),
Bruco (caterpillar), Chiocciola (snail), Giraffa (giraffe), Onda
(wave), Lupa (she-wolf), Torre (tower), Leocorno (Unicorn), Civetta
(little-owl), Drago (dragon), Istrice (crested porcupine), Oca (goose), Nicchio
(seashell), Tartuca (tortoise), Pantera (panther). In
each race run only 10 districts and the other 7 run of law in the
next race. The Palio is played in a beautyfull square : “Piazza del
Campo”. The particularity of this square is its concave shape that
allows the entire square to see the race.
